Guerrilla Filming Locations
When making a film, 99.9% of us don’t wish to disturb the general public. Yes, we may be wishing to use a park or a city street briefly and not have the money nor time to obtain permits, but we’re not looking to cause any trouble. So what you need in order to get this done, are polite, well spoken individuals to help deal with passer bys and to keep their eyes open in case of problems.
On larger sets, these are known as P.A.’s (Production Assistants). These individuals stand guard of the perimeter of the set, keeping pedestrians out of the shot and explaining to them what’s going on. They also make sure things don’t get stolen, which is something you need to be aware of too, but I’m digressing…
Essentially, if you’re using public space, expect your average person to not care about what you’re up to. If you’re blocking their way, that’s a problem. So, get in there, take up minimal space, film what you want to and leave. If anyone interrupts, simply explain to them you’re making an independent film and that you’ll be as quick as possible. Try to accommodate them and help however possible to resolve the matter.
The idea behind making a film without permits isn’t to be rebellious. It’s to get your material made, fast, and looking like you’d envisioned.
Trespassing isn’t allowable though. Regardless of whether you’re caught or not, you won’t own the rights to reproduce your film because you’ll have used someone else’s property. Be certain only to guerilla film areas which you can legally reproduce. Otherwise you’ll just be throwing your film up on YouTube or your own personal website, and it probably won’t get as far as you’d like.
Continuing on from these points, there’s the novel idea of just asking those in charge… Many restaurant/bar owners, storefront or shop owners, or a wealth of other establishment management will be more than willing to oblige if approached properly. They can of course refuse, but if you try to work around the time they’re least busy (and/or closed), you never know; a helping hand may be in it for you and your independent (stress that, “Independent!”) project.
And of course lastly, there’s the use of family, friends’ and friend’s friends’ apartments, homes etc. All you need to do is ask and the worst you can be told is, “No.” That won’t put you any further back.
